Laurent Laniel - DrugSTRAT - Drugs&Strategy

Laurent Laniel (1966, Firminy, France). I was trained as a translator and a sociologist of international relations in France, Spain and Britain. I work as scientific analyst, drug supply reduction, at the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) in Lisbon, Portugal. I am a doctoral student in sociology at the Centre interdisciplinaire de recherches sur la paix et d'études stratégiques (CIRPES) of the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) in Paris, France.

In 1989-1991, I taught translation at the School of Translators of the Ghana Institute of Languages of the University of Ghana, at Accra, Ghana. Between 1995 and 2000, I worked as researcher and translator at the Geopolitical Drug Watch (OGD – Observatoire géopolitique des drogues), where I conducted many field studies in Africa, the Americas, and Europe, authoring and translating a large number of articles and reports (for e.g., the European Commission). Between 1997 and 2002, I was member of, and consultant for UNESCO's Programme, Management of Social Transformations Connected with the International Drug Problem (MOST-Drugs). I also wrote and translated material for the Nantes-based Centre for Geopolitical Drug Studies (AEGD) during that period. I was research fellow at the Institut national des hautes études de sécurité (INHES, ex-IHESI) between November 2003 and January 2008.

Between 2005 and 2008, I coordinated together with Pierre-Arnaud Chouvy (CNRS-Prodig), a 3-year international research project on "Agricultural Drug Production: What obstacles to Development?" funded by the French Ministry of Scientific Research. The project led to field studies in Morocco, Bolivia, Peru and Mexico, and to several publications.

I attended the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on the international drug problem (UNGASS) in New York City in June 1998. In April/May 1999, the American embassy in Paris invited me to participate in the US State Department's International Visitor Program. I was member of the editorial board of the journal Revue Toxibase (until it closed) in 2006 and I am on the editorial board of the journal Psychotropes.
